Build a whole-home material hierarchy

Choose primary materials that repeat across floors, walls and joinery, then add limited accents for important rooms. Repetition creates calm and makes transitions feel intentional. Each room can have character without becoming a separate showroom.

Prepare a coordinated sample board including adjacent paints, metals, stone, timber, fabrics and lighting temperature. Materials should be judged together.

Select stone by use, not name

Natural stones vary in porosity, strength, veining and batch appearance. Match the stone and finish to floors, wet areas, counters, stairs or feature walls. Review slab layouts for prominent surfaces and agree how veins meet.

Confirm sealing, cleaning and repair expectations. Keep suitable spare material from the approved batch for future replacement.

Detail timber and joinery for stability and use

Clarify whether the design uses solid timber, veneer, engineered board or laminate and where each is appropriate. Substrate, edge treatment, hardware and internal storage quality matter as much as the visible finish.

Coordinate AC grilles, lighting, switches, access panels and appliances before fabrication. Large panels require careful detailing to manage movement and alignment.

Control sunlight, colour and ageing

Strong daylight can change how colours appear and may affect some finishes or fabrics over time. Review samples in the actual orientation at different hours. Window treatments, glazing and furniture position help manage exposure.

Decide whether the design should patinate naturally or maintain a uniform appearance. Communicate expected variation so natural materials are not mistaken for defects.

Choose metals, glass and fabrics as working materials

Metal finishes differ in fingerprint visibility, scratch resistance and repairability. Confirm samples and fabrication method. Glass selection should consider safety, privacy, reflection, cleaning and edge quality.

For upholstery and curtains, assess abrasion, light exposure, cleanability and fire-performance requirements relevant to the project. Use performance backing where appearance alone is insufficient.

Approve mock-ups and plan maintenance

Create mock-ups for critical floor-to-wall junctions, shadow gaps, stone edges, doors, integrated lighting and repeated joinery. A drawing cannot fully show workmanship, reflectivity and tolerance.

At handover, provide care instructions, approved cleaning products, warranties and spare materials. A luxury interior stays luxurious when maintenance access and repair have been designed from the start.
